Sleep Mode Problems

I noticed the other day that when I closed the lid to my PowerBook, it was taking 10-20 seconds to go to sleep. It used to take only 1-3 seconds. Ugh, what’s ong? I didn’t install any software, honest! After lots of gratuitous ps augwwx invokations, I realised that the problem might be related o the one thing that I did do in the last few days. Turns out that if you have a printer installed that is an “Apple Internal Fax Modem” printer (as I had one to fax a document), the FAX daemons appear to interfere with the sleep initiation.

The solution was to remove that printer using the Print Center application and disable the FAX startup item that was added automatically to your Login Items. See the System Preferences panel for the Login Items prefs pane. After that, just log out and log in. You should have your sleep speediness restored.
