Product Warning Labels

The quirky and somewhat cool looking Amadana.com web site sells a few unique products, including a wooden trim headphone set that is attracting attention. I’m not sure I’d like the headphones, having become somewhat attached to my Shure E2c set, but they certainly have the best warning labels around. I’m going to lobby our tech-pubs group to see if they would consider adding appropriate labels to our product manuals too.

For their portable DVD player:

Roughly I think these are Do not use as…

  • …a catchers mitt at backstop;
  • …a banana quisher, or;
  • …a rain shelter if you are a Ninja

For their calculator:

Roughly translates to Do not use for:

  • …a bikini top;
  • …a playing card,
  • …a sandwich spread,
  • …a signals kite if you are a Ninja, or;
  • …a family photo (Update: Family Emblem)

And finally, the wooden headphones:

Roughly translates to Do not use

  • …as a grappling hook if you are a Ninja,
  • …as a stethoscope on women,
  • …as a high-sensitivity microphone to crack safes as a Ninja,
  • …as a dog toy, or;
  • …as a fishing lure.

Those ninja’s aren’t getting any breaks with these products! I’ve only pulled three samples; there are many other and they will almost universally elicit a giggle or three. Go check them out at their products page.

    …a family photo (??)

    A friend who lived in Japan in his childhood offers the following explanation:

    It reminds me of a common theme in samurai tv serials over there where an unidentified samurai whips out a seal that marks him as a special agent of the emperor or someone (much like an undercover cop’s badge). The warning maybe to avoid using the calculator as such.

    Further:

    That’s an important warning, because in the serials you typically whipped it out when you were surrounded by 50 warriors about to kill you. But when you flash the badge, they all put their swords away and bow down on the ground. If you were using the calculator, you might not get the same effect.

    Bummer — it was much more fun when I had to guess. :-)
