Indeed I am, but I'm not in a hurry. There is much to enjoy between here and there.

We dealt with this over 10 years ago. Making a website for a Czech customer, with multiple languages (Czech, German, English). I suggested we could use some locale information to sort it out automatically.

My Czech partner was adamant that we shouldn't do this because most people in the Czech republic apparently used US English versions of Internet Explorer.

A couple years later, I got a taste of why a language override button is mandatory first-hand when trying to log into my own Squirrel Mail server from an airport lounge in Frankfurt. Not only did I have to figure out how to type my password on a German keyboard, but I had to navigate a UI that had completely switched languages with no recourse to change.

It's a classic case of meeting market demand: for 95% or more of the people such a behaviour wouldn't even be noticed, it would be just exactly what they expected and wanted. The French speakers get the French website, etc. For the programmers, it's easy and seems like the obvious and correct way to use the data available.

I think you CAN do that with the interactive version.... almost. You can slide back and forth but it isn't 'smooth'. The rendering restarts at the date you release it (makes sense in a way).

Neat. I downloaded that and checked it out, kinda of terrifying-fascinating to watch it on *our* repository. Bonus points if they add a slider or something so you can drag your way though time. :)

This is so over-the-top that it's impossible to tell whether it's sheer parody or actual news: http://www.crazyapplerumors.com/?p=1165

And, just to make sure -- you *are* familiar with the term "yak shaving" as it applies to software, right? http://projects.csail.mit.edu/gsb/old-archive/gsb-archive/gsb2000-02-11.html

I also think there will be a strong generational component to this. There will be folks who are older and naturally more closed, and some up an comming youth that will be essentially transparent and manage it well. Somewhere in the middle with be some youngsters that will grow up regretting all the silly things they posted to facebook and it may haunt a generation as they age.

I remember reading an article a few years ago about our near-future "goldfish bowl" society. I think it is likely we'll continue moving in that direction because the perceived advantages will outweigh the perceived disadvantages.

I think most of the issues of privacy on Facebook will soon seem quaint.

You can do the same thing without iTunes (might be useful for batch processing of mp3s -> m4b w/chapters):

Even though it says for Linux, it'll work on OSX, MS Windows, *BSD, etc.

How to create an iTunes/iPod compatible audiobook (MPEG4 m4b) on Linux using MP4Box and mp4v2: http://froebe.net/blog/2009/12/24/how-to-create-an-itunesipod-compatible-audiobook-mpeg4-m4b-on-linux-using-mp4box-and-mp4v2-v1-9-1-it-can-be-done/

Hope this helps

Yeah, it's great that we're settling on a single standard of {jam, bjam, ant, scons, cook, gbs} to solve this problem. It sure makes it easy to work with new opensource projects, having the learning opportunity of spending hours or days figuring out a new and alien suite of build tools before you can do a damn thing to the code.
