Casa is Closing

I recently found out that Casa de Nacimiento is closing it’s doors. So many women have gone through those doors, interns, midwives, pregnant women and more. It truly is an institution and it is very sad that it is no longer going to be there. We will no longer have easy access to a community of women who understand the… (more…)

A Moment in Time

The girl came in with her mother. She appeared to be 6 or 7 years old. She stayed close as her mother signed in and then moved over to view the photos of the newly delivered. The mother appeared to be 37 or 38 weeks, her belly large in front of her, pushing out her shirt, causing it to drape… (more…)

Home Again

For a wee bit at least. I have company coming in the next couple of weeks and then I am headed to Canada to rent one of our places. These tenants were the only ones not in a lease – but at least they did give me 2 months notice. Casa was educational, as always. I definitely learned more about… (more…)

Mensa International

So I had the funniest conversation the other day. I was hanging around in the kitchen and the secretaries were teasing each other. I overheard the word ‘mensa’ used in a teasing way. I asked them what it meant. They asked me what I thought it meant. I told them about Mensa International. They all laughed… hard. When they finally… (more…)

True to Form

Casa delivers… I arrived yesterday afternoon, got some food, went for groceries and went to Casa. I said my round of hellos and just at the shift change of the midwives a primip (1st timer) came in complete (fully dilated and ready to push). 45 minutes or so later that mama was cradling her firstborn with smiles on her face.… (more…)

Peaceful Morning

This morning finds me sitting on my couch, reading through email and enjoying the delish coffee that my sweet hubby made for me. The blinds on the front window are open letting in the warm morning sun and showcasing the steam rising from my coffee mug. Ahhh… Peace. Tomorrow morning however, will find me in the airport awaiting boarding. Off… (more…)

…And back again

Here I am two years later and much has happened in the mean time. I won’t go back to update totally but I will make references to what has been along with some explanation. I am back in Calgary again… but not really. In the past 2 years, I have moved to Santa Cruz, travelled back and forth to Casa,… (more…)

Last El Paso Post

Well, I am sitting at the airport waiting for my late flight. I hope that I make it home tonight. I am really looking forward to pancake breakfast tomorrow morning. I find myself quite sad that I am leaving. I feel like I have learned soooo much here and yet I feel as though I know nothing at all. I… (more…)

Updates…

My last week here!!! It has been slightly crazy… sorry that I have not written earlier but as you all can imagine now… It has been a wild ride these last few days. Last week was an odd time, I actually missed a few births , because I went over to Juarez one day and once the birth wasn’t even… (more…)

Tough Decisions and Universal Expectations

Well, the last couple of days have been an exercise in people relations. I did have a birth and even that was an exercise of my people skills. I think that I have done OK. With so many women hanging around all the time with each other, there is bound to be some discord. And there has been. There has… (more…)
